The City of Wichita, KS had three 48” reinforced concrete pipe leveling tubes between two lakes that had begun to deteriorate. Sink holes were starting to form in the street and sidewalks above the tubes, causing safety issues. In 2021 the City decided to utilize MICP in the center tube as a pilot project, and rehabilitate two of the tubes with CIPP. Keeping the access pits dry for the lining work proved to be the biggest challenge, as the system can operate in damp pipe, but not standing water. Temporary walls (dams) were installed at each access pit so water could be continuously pumped out. With July temperatures over 105 F, the work was done at night to prevent heat exhaustion. SippTech successfully completed 150 LF of pipe. The City was pleased with the MICP product and concluded that it would provide better long-term performance than the CIPP lining in the adjacent tubes.
